No city on earth has a better claim on Top Gun than San Diego. The real fighter weapons school — the actual TOPGUN — was based at NAS Miramar here ("Fightertown USA") until 1996. Both movies filmed across the city. The Maverick premiere happened on the flight deck of the USS Midway. If you're a fan and you're coming to San Diego, this is pilgrimage territory.

Here's how to do it right, whether you've got one day or a full weekend.

Day 1: the essential Top Gun San Diego circuit

Morning — take the guided tour. The Top Gun Experience is a 2-hour driving tour built exactly for this: Kansas City Barbeque, Liberty Station, Cabrillo National Monument, Point Loma, and the San Diego Bay waterfront, with a local guide telling the behind-the-scenes stories you'd never get on your own. Doing it first orients you — everything else you see afterward lands harder. $199 per person, run by Concierge of Life Experiences.

Afternoon — USS Midway Museum. The Top Gun: Maverick world premiere was held on this flight deck, and the Midway is the single best naval aviation experience in the city: 60 exhibits, 30 restored aircraft, docents who actually flew off carriers. Budget 3–4 hours. It's a 10-minute walk from where the morning tour ends downtown.

Evening — dinner at Kansas City Barbeque. End the day where Goose played "Great Balls of Fire." The BBQ joint at 600 W Harbor Dr is decked out in Top Gun memorabilia (rebuilt after a 2008 fire), the piano is still there, and the vibe is pure 1986. Order the burnt ends.

Day 2: go deeper

The Top Gun House in Oceanside. Charlie's 1888 Victorian cottage was saved from demolition, moved a block, restored for nearly $1 million, and reopened in May 2022 as the centerpiece of the Mission Pacific Hotel courtyard by the Oceanside Pier — complete with a replica of Maverick's Kawasaki GPZ900R out front for photos. It's about 40 miles north; the Coaster train from downtown San Diego drops you in Oceanside.

Miramar and military aviation. MCAS Miramar is an active base, so you can't tour the old Fightertown USA at will — but the Miramar Air Show, held each fall, is one of the largest military air shows in the country and open to the public. If your trip lines up with it, it's unmissable. Check the official schedule for dates.

Cabrillo National Monument at golden hour. Even if the morning tour drove you through, come back at sunset. The lighthouse that played Viper's house, the Pacific crashing below, the San Diego skyline across the bay — it's the most beautiful spot in the city, Top Gun connection or not.

A drink at the Lafayette Hotel. The Mississippi Room at 2223 El Cajon Blvd is where Maverick serenaded Charlie with "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" (standing in for the Miramar Officers' Club interior). The hotel is a restored 1940s gem — have a cocktail and soak it in.

  • The guided tour sells out. The Top Gun Experience is a small-group driving tour — book it when you book your flights, not when you land.
  • Pair it with the bay. You're already downtown for the tour and the Midway — a sunset cruise on San Diego Bay the same evening is the perfect cap to the day.
  • Oceanside is a half day. Don't try to cram the Top Gun House into a packed San Diego itinerary — give it a morning, have lunch by the pier, and Coaster back.
