MCRD Graduation Weekend: Family Day, Graduation, and What to Do Around Them

If someone you love is graduating from Marine Corps boot camp at MCRD San Diego, your trip has a shape: arrive Wednesday, Family Day Thursday, graduation Friday morning — and then a weekend in San Diego with a brand-new Marine who has ten days of boot leave. Graduations happen most Fridays of the year, so this guide works whenever your Marine's company date lands. Here's how the days run, and how to fill the hours around them.

Wednesday: arrive and meet the families

Many families fly in Wednesday — MCRD sits just north of San Diego International Airport, minutes from downtown. On Wednesday evening, the Depot hosts a Family Meet & Greet dinner at the Bayview Restaurant (Gate 5 opens at 3 PM for it). Your recruit won't be there — they're still training — but you'll meet their drill instructors and the families who've been on this journey alongside yours. It requires advance registration and sells out, so book it as soon as your Marine's company schedule is confirmed.

Thursday: Family Day

This is the day you see your Marine for the first time in 13 weeks. All visitor vehicles enter through Gate 5 (Washington St.), which opens at 6:30 AM — vehicles and personnel are searched on entry, so arrive early and expect lines.

  • 8:15 AM — Warm-up on Shepherd Field (the Parade Deck)
  • 8:30 AM — The Motivational Run. Your Marine's whole company runs past the bleachers in formation. This is the first time you'll see them, and the last time the company is together as recruits. Sit where you can see the parade deck, and bring tissues.
  • 9:30–11:20 AM — Welcome Orientation, Marine Corps 101, the Company Commander's Brief, and "Beyond the Yellow Footprints" at the Depot Theater — the story of what your Marine just went through.
  • 11:20 AM — Liberty Formation and dismissal on the Parade Deck.
  • 11:45 AM–5:30 PM — Depot Liberty. Your Marine is yours for the afternoon — on base. Families eat together at the Bayview Restaurant's Liberty Lunch (11 AM–3 PM), tour the MCRD Command Museum, and walk the grounds where they trained. One beloved piece of family wisdom: walk on your Marine's left side, so their right hand stays free to salute officers you pass.

Everything on base is cashless — bring a debit or credit card.

Friday: graduation day

  • 7:30–8:30 AM — The Morning Colors ceremony at the Commanding General's Building, a quiet, beautiful start to the day.
  • 8:30–9:45 AM — Seating on the Parade Deck. Bleachers are organized by platoon; be seated by 9:45 AM.
  • 10:00–11:30 AM — The Graduation Ceremony. Your recruit marches in as a United States Marine.
  • Afternoon — Depot Liberty again until about 5:30 PM, and then boot leave begins: ten days before your Marine reports to the School of Infantry at Camp Pendleton. Most families take their Marine out into San Diego from here.

Bleachers mean sun — hats, sunscreen, and water are not optional, whatever the season.

The weekend with your new Marine

After 13 weeks of boot camp, your Marine will have a short list of wants: a real meal, a shower that isn't communal, sleep, and time with you that isn't scheduled. San Diego makes the rest easy:

USS Midway Museum. The retired carrier on the downtown waterfront (910 N Harbor Dr, open daily 10 AM–5 PM) hits differently with a new Marine at your side — give it half a day.

A harbor or sunset cruise. Friday's ceremony ends by 11:30 AM, which leaves the whole afternoon. A cruise on San Diego Bay — past the carriers, under the Coronado Bridge — is the celebration outing that doesn't require any energy your Marine doesn't have.

Old Town and a proper dinner. The first restaurant meal matters. Old Town's Mexican restaurants and the Gaslamp's steakhouses are both minutes from the Depot, and neither requires a plan more complicated than showing up hungry.

Whale watching or sportfishing (seasonal). If your Marine's leave stretches through the weekend, a morning on the water — gray whales December through April, fishing year-round — is the outing they'll talk about at SOI.

For the broader picture — homecomings, base visits, and visiting a service member anytime — see our military family visit guide. And if your family is aviation-minded, the Top Gun filming locations around San Diego make an easy extra half-day.

Practical tips for graduation families

  • Bring REAL ID. Every visitor 18 and older must show a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or a U.S. passport to enter MCRD (in effect since May 7, 2025); everyone 16+ needs photo ID. Drivers: license, registration, and proof of insurance.
  • Confirm your date before you book anything. Companies graduate on a rolling schedule and dates shift, including around holidays. Check the official graduation schedule at mcrdsd.marines.mil for your Marine's company.
  • Arrive earlier than feels reasonable. Gate lines, searches, and bleacher seating reward the families who show up at dawn — especially for the Motivational Run.
  • Book flexible where you can. Training timelines move. Refundable tours and lodging with some date cushion will save you stress if the schedule slips.
  • Plan for three generations. Grandparents and kids are half the crowd. The Parade Deck has bleacher seating and limited shade — build in rest, water, and an easy afternoon after the big mornings.
